I don't think Charlotte Bronte would've approved this book!

I enjoyed this book but I think Mrs Gaskell gives a slightly one-sided view of Charlotte Bronte. I think there is much more to Charlotte than this biography gives her credit for. I have a feeling Charlotte would've disliked this book immensely!

A must for bronte fans everywhere

I have a confession to make - I am a bronte obsessive and I am comforted by the fact that I am not alone. For anyone remotely interested in the brontes, this book is essential. Yes, admittedly since its publication there have been an avalanche of biographies etc and few can match Juliet Barker's " The Brontes ", but Gaskell's now somewhat quaint account is one of the first and most tender presentations of a dear friend and there in lies its value.

READ THIS TO GAIN BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE

Having read all the Bronte novels more than once I decided to read The Life of Charlotte Bronte by Elizabeth Gaskell.How I wish I had read this first as I think it gives an accurate account, from letters and interviews obtained after the death of Charlotte of how the Bronte Sisters used their actual life experiences to create the characters and events in their respective novels.I never realised the absolute hardships the Bronte family endured both mentally and physically during their short lives; their battles with constant ill health and cold damp winters with limited diet that didn't help their constitution.If you like the Bronte novels then you will want to re-read them once you have read this with a deeper understanding.
