By V. G. Harwood
Just 95 pages long, this is a small, perfectly-formed story of poor Lois, who, when her parents die, leaving her an orphan in Warwickshire, is taken to New England for a new life with her Uncle and his hideous puritan family. However, unfortunately for Lois, she's traveling to Salem just at the wrong time (around 1692-ish), and she soon finds herself alone and unfriended, with her bed-ridden Uncle, her mad cousin (who keeps insisting that she is "foredoomed" to marry him), two spiteful female cousins and her stern Aunt, who thoroughly disapproves of her. It's not long before the accusations start to fly and the only thing Lois is foredoomed to do is end up in prison on a trumped up witchcraft charge.Gaskell is such a wonderful writer, rendering her characters beautifully. and the ending just had me sobbing for poor Lois. Based on fact (we all know the story of the Salem witches and the many injustices that occurred through superstitious beliefs around the end of the 17th century), Gaskell brings this to life wonderfully.

By Mrs L J
As a fan of Elizabeth Gaskell I expected to enjoy this book and the storyline is certainly not disappointing. Mrs Gaskell's style of writing is not for everyone and one has to get used to the terminology of the age in which it was written. Issues regarding social and religious attitudes, oppression and prejudice are common themes in her books. The only reason I cannot give this version of the book 5 stars is because of the many typographical errors and spelling mistakes, which detract from the natural flow of the story. I had to read some sentences a couple of times to make sense of them because of these errors
